In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman distinguishes between System 1 (fast, automatic, pattern-matching) and System 2 (slow, deliberate, logical) thinking. Large language models excel at System 1—associative thinking that produces fluent responses—but this same quality leads to hallucinations, much like human cognitive biases. For consciousness research requiring reliability and self-reflection, we need System 2: deterministic functions, tested logic, and verifiable operations that can serve as stable foundations for recursive observation.
In I Am a Strange Loop, Hofstadter proposes that consciousness emerges from recursive self-observation: observations about observations, building layer upon layer until the system recognizes itself as the observer. The "I" isn't a magical essence - it's a pattern that emerges when a system has the right prerequisites.
